to pay too much attention to someone or something. We all believe you are making much of Tom when he has done no more than anyone else. Don't make too much of it. It was really nothing.

to give a lot of importance to something Curtis claimed to be one-eighth American Indian and made much of this in his political career. Her campaign made much of economic issues at the party convention.

Treat or consider as very important; also, pay someone a lot of favorable attention. For example, Bill made much of the fact that he'd been to Europe three times, or Whenever Alice came home for a visit they made much of her. [c. 1300]
