To sign in to one's place of business by means of a magnetic or electronic identity card. All employees are required to card in at the beginning of each shift to ensure they are paid for the appropriate hours each day. Due to the highly confidential nature of our research, everyone has to card in at the security desk to gain access to any part of the facility.

Similarly, card out means to sign out of one's place of business, as in I want to sneak out early, so could you please card out for me at the end of the day? This term arose in the 1940s with the invention of automated check-in systems.
