sock hop

n. a dance party where everyone dances in stocking feet. (From the 1950s.) Sock hops were popular in schools that had expensive wooden floors in their gymnasiums.

A school dance. Back in the days when school dances were held in gymnasiums, students were requested to remove their shoes, which would otherwise scratch the varnished and polished floor. It being the bobby-sox era, kids Lindy-hopped and slow-danced in their socked feet, and the events became known as sock hops.
