1. Lit. to move forward one step or several steps. The volunteer stepped forward. I stepped forward and someone moved up behind me immediately.
2. Fig. to volunteer to present important information. When I go into court, I will have to step forward and present evidence. It is my civic duty. If you have information to present, you should step forward and seek recognition to do so.
