1. To come to a stop on a racetrack, typically due to a mechanical malfunction. Used of a racecar or racecar driver: The car stopped out on the track. I was leading the race until I suddenly stopped out halfway through the second lap.
2. To sell a stock automatically when it reaches a specified price; execute someone's stop order. Used chiefly in the passive: We were stopped out of the stock at $92.06 for a considerable gain.
3. stop out of To withdraw temporarily from some institution of learning: My adviser recommended that I stop out of college for a semester to travel a bit.
