trench mouth

trench mouth

A bacterial infection in which the gums and throat are inflamed and prone to ulcers. Also known as "necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis," the illness is called "trench mouth" because it commonly affected soldiers in the trenches during World War I. I just saw a patient with a terrible case of trench mouth.
